About Golden Retriever Rescue Groups

Breed-focused rescue groups grew as an alternative way to help dogs that could no longer stay with their owners or needed placement outside traditional shelters. Many of these programs are created and operated by volunteers who have strong experience with and commitment to the breed.

Golden Retriever rescue organizations are generally organized and managed locally. National breed organizations may support rescue work, share information, connect groups, and provide useful resources, while each local program normally manages its own daily rescue and adoption decisions.

Rescue programs may receive Golden Retrievers from owners or shelters, provide evaluation and veterinary care, and then introduce suitable dogs to carefully screened adopters. Medical needs, vaccinations, sterilization, and adoption requirements are handled according to each rescue group’s own procedures, and adoption fees may vary by program and by dog.
